Equal Justice Law Attorney Job Posting

Equal Justice Law is a non-profit law firm that primarily represents people eligible for court-appointed counsel in Oregon courts on appeal in criminal, post-conviction, and habeas corpus cases. The firm handles all post-conviction and state habeas appeals pursuant to a contract with OPDC. We are seeking to fill a position for an experienced appellate attorney.

The ideal candidate has a license to practice law in the State of Oregon, outstanding legal research and writing skills, and an interest in representing clients convicted of crimes. Attorneys with appellate experience, ideally two years, are preferred. Experience with post-conviction and/or state habeas cases is preferred but not required.

Compensation depends on experience, but is comparable to the compensation provided by OPDC Appellate Division (salary range of between $90,000 and $140,000). Equal Justice Law pays for 100% of our employees’ health and dental insurance premium. We also offer a hybrid work opportunity with the possibility of remote work upon completion of training. A 401K matching retirement plan will be provided within approximately 90 days of employment. Attorneys employed by Equal Justice Law are currently eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (see equaljusticelaw.org for more information)

Attorneys and staff at Equal Justice Law work in a team environment. The attorney hired for this position will have the opportunity to learn from experienced trial and appellate attorneys who have worked on all types of criminal cases from DUII to capital murder at both the state and federal level.

For candidates who are interested, there is also an opportunity to undertake work on select retained cases through Weber & Associates, LLC, a private for-profit boutique law firm that has a resource-sharing agreement with Equal Justice Law. Working for Weber & Associates provides an opportunity to work on a variety of case types enabling an attorney to further develop their practice in areas that interest them. It also provides an opportunity to earn additional monthly income of up to $5,000 per month.

Equal Justice Law Legal Assistant/ Office Manager Job Posting

Equal Justice Law (formerly part of O’Connor Weber, LLC) is a non-profit law firm that primarily represents people eligible for court-appointed counsel in Oregon courts on appeal in criminal, post-conviction, and habeas corpus cases. The firm handles all post-conviction and state habeas appeals pursuant to a contract with OPDC. We are seeking to fill a legal assistant/office manager position.

The ideal candidate has experience working in an office environment, is detail oriented, and willing to work as part of a team. Primary job responsibilities include: formatting and filing attorney briefs in the Oregon Court of Appeals and Oregon Supreme Court, calendaring all due dates for attorneys, communicating with clients and court staff, answering phones, and processing incoming and outgoing mail. Approximately, twenty-five percent (25%) of the job involves managing the office. Office manager duties include: coordinating subscription services (e.g. Clio, Microsoft, Adobe), cataloging and purchasing office supplies, and otherwise ensuring that the office is running smoothly.

Compensation depends on experience, but ranges from $40,0000-48,000 annually. Equal Justice Law pays for 100% of our employees’ health and dental insurance premium. Once training is completed, this position also includes the opportunity to work from home in a hybrid work environment. A 401K matching retirement plan will be provided within approximately three months from the date of employment. Because Equal Justice Law is a nonprofit, employees are also currently eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (see equaljusticelaw.org for more information).

To date, two prior legal assistants have gone on to attend Lewis and Clark Law School and our current legal assistant intends to start law school this fall.

The successful candidate may also provide administrative support on select retained cases through Weber & Associates, LLC, a private for-profit boutique law firm that has a resource-sharing agreement with Equal Justice Law. Working for Weber & Associates provides an opportunity to work on a variety of case types enabling a legal assistant to further develop their skill set in a variety of areas. This work also provides the opportunity to earn additional income through bonuses.
